Etched into a mountain on the Pacific-side of the Southern Baja, Quivira offers a challenging and exciting game of golf for everyone who likes scenery and adventure as a side dish to their 18-holes. Jack Nicklaus’ sixth course in Los Cabos, with 7,139-yards, par-72; takes golfers on a wild ride through the mountain-desert-ocean ecosystem that characterizes the region.
Quivira’s first four holes ease players into the round before the scenic cart ride up the rocky mountain, which reveals a pair of stunning par 3s, the 6th and 13th holes, that cling to granite cliffs on the Pacific. The difficult 310-yard fifth hole, where Nicklaus demanded some last-minute changes, will probably always be controversial since the mountainous terrain demands the golf cart’s GPS system just so players can understand the landscape. These three holes provide the perfect perches for catching the migrating whales during winter months and has that whimsical influence over golfers to pull out their cameras before moving onto the 7th hole. Four other holes wander through the same towering sand dunes lining the coast and also used by Davis Love III and Tiger Woods at the highly regarded Diamante Golf & Real Estate Resort, in the neighboring property.
The several semi-blind shots through the dunes — off the tee on the uphill par-4 at no. 11 and the second shot on the twisting downhill par 5 at no. 12 — might be disconcerting to first-timers. The round climaxes with three elevated tee shots on daunting par 4s through the more traditional desert landscape. The 18th green, thatch-roofed clubhouse and driving range all run along the beach, where players must navigate their shots using the Pacific winds; which are often a condition during a majority of the year.
Playing Quivira is an all-inclusive experience. A $295 green fee (with occasional discounts) includes food & beverages, such as freshly prepared sliders, tacos and quesadillas, and drinks served at three elaborate comfort stations throughout the course. Only guests of the four Pueblo Bonito Oceanfront Resorts & Spas in Los Cabos, and property owners in the Quivera Residences such as Copala, Coronado, Montecristo Estates Luxury Villas and Novaspania Residences; have access to such a special experience. Quivira Golf will blow you away, whether the breeze kicks up, or not.
